The Scottish band have had a collection of singles but now can boast a solid, varied indie rock body of work with their debut EP. They span across the whole indie spectrum that really packs a punch all the way through; we seem them touching on The Strokes to The Vaccines to the blues and classic 60’s esq songwriting.
‘She’s so Hot’ begins with such a force! Its a very quick rock’n’roll number with some heavy but smooth guitars. The drums are going at it that really takes the song along for the wild ride, despite the vocals being lost in the mix potentially, its a great and ferocious start to the EP. ‘Diamond Doll’ has such swagger and blues to it that you would say could be a Black Keys influence, however the boys make it their own. The vocals sound so cool, singing about a girl who you dig but sadly wants a man with money; but don’t you worry, somehow the aesthetic of the song still makes you feel cool despite falling flat with this woman.
‘Count To Ten’ has a great 60’s songwriting with early rhythm’n’blues melody, potentially a nod to The Beatles (I could hear a young Lennon singing the chorus?). The song’s purity and slight shift shows off their ability of subtle changes within their music and overall a great indication of how talented the songwriting is within the band. We are then smashed with ‘Stuck in a Rut’ that has some brilliant, heavy Scottish vocal delivery! The garage, surfer rock guitar riff is filled with fury and passion, it really does take you for a ride that must be a lot of fun live.
There are some new tracks on this EP but the last two songs on here are previous singles in ‘I’ll Be Happy When You Die’ and ‘Control Yourself’. The later is a stand out on the EP, a great single that offers a great indie guitar line that really fits nicely with the melody. The lyric ‘it’s been a rough night’ just makes me smile so much as it feels so Strokes like but fresh! Honestly this song could become very popular in the indie quarters, it sounds instantly classic and just a great performance overall. 'I'll Be Happy..' has a slight punk sound to it that again gives Trm another turn in what it offers.
