People (Pt.1) EP- Ocean Flatts: Such A Strong First Outing By The Charged, Post Brit-Pop Band

Updated: Dec 29, 2020

The Medway band have released their debut EP at the end of a very confusing and difficult 2020. Ocean Flatts began recording this body of work and then boom....COVID.....with potentially their front man catching it too. Yet the release is now here and have this 5 piece post Brit pop/post punk outfit nailed it, they sure have.

The re-recording of the lead single, ‘Atomic’, is triumph to say the least and begins the first part of the ‘People’ project. The catchiness of the main chorus is very impressive, while the conviction on the delivery overall is a great thing to hear on the newer version. Marshall Osbourne doing a top job as the lead singer, he is for sure getting stronger and embodies the angle the band are going for within his delivery to a tee.

The opening of ‘Tommy From Strood’ is said person on the phone, refusing to get involved is indeed highly comical. The song itself, a bold nod to Slaves, tackles the domestic woes the country has been facing post 2016. Lyrics are clever, with some funny digs at the stupid reasoning for some on Brexit and the character mentioned, is depicted very well. The chorus again is catchy with its stomp like nature and also the drumming by Dan is honestly phenomenal.

The EP has its rest period with the acoustic guitar focused, ‘Dorothy’. Again the character based aspect of the lyrics is very impressive, we can all imagine this woman (who does not like a lot to the say the least). One thing that also stands out on the trick is the beautiful and subtle electric guitar, played amazingly by Damon Westwood and it gives the song such a great extra layer

The closer of ‘Pictures (with a filter)’ returns to the full band set up and the Arctic Monkeys aspects to it with the rhythm guitar and bass, is a lot of fun. You may feel like that you want the song to be unleashed but the epic nature of the bridge rewards you, the classic guitar sounds you end up hearing are elegant and passionate. Ocean Flatts deliver a strong offering for their debut EP, the only way is up and the possibilities are endless for the guys.

Make sure to check out the interview we have done with the guys done on, IGTV!
