Medicine EP- Baby Queen: A Brilliant Opening To A Clever and Infectious Songwriter

Updated: Dec 29, 2020

The South African born artist has been leading up to her debut EP with impressive and highly enjoyable singles. She has been bringing together a strong following and having an enjoyable social media presence, after hearing the EP you will know why it is such an awesome and healthy one too. So with this debut EP, can the singer-songwriter deliver up on her kick arse first batch of singles? For sure she is showing her incredible talent on this piece of work, delivering a debut that is filled with quality, humour and truths.

‘Internet Religion’ begins ‘Medicine’ where Baby Queen tackles the obsessive and ego driven ethos that can be found way too much online, straight away showing her amazing skill at delivering her opinions in a well crafted way; “this is my internet obsession, this is why the kids got depression’ is a lyric that stands out to show off her concerns for the unhealthy existence we can have online. The song really focusses on delivering this message while still having a euphoric chorus, it becomes hypnotic by the end but its hella catchy.

The stand out single from the EP follows and its called ‘Pretty Girl Lie’, it truly shines so brightly with its humorous/honest lyrics and infectious melody! With regards to the words, I could share every lyric on this song as Baby Queen delivers such a punch and laugh on every line; from the beginning line of ‘edit my legs till the doorway bends’ to ‘the pretty girl style is super contrived, all the little kids cry, authenticity dies’ and ‘you are what you eat, so I’ll become nothing’.

The list could go on here, it is truly brilliant how the singer-songwriter has crafted a gem of a song that delivers such an important tone, about how unhealthy and ridiculous online behaviour has become. It is great to see someone with a platform that is followed by many young people, using it to support/help their audience understand and get through life. As previously mentioned, the song is infectious with how beautifully it flows in the verses and the hook of the chorus makes you want to swoosh your hair around, there are not many better songs around today in 2020.

‘Want Me’ offers a cool beat, yet it still has that poppy rock element in the chorus. Baby Queen delivering the verses very quickly gives that thought process of wanting someone to want them hat intense feeling, with the chorus having more of a lighter tone. ‘Buzzkill’ keeps the beat ordinated nature going and really has a Taylor Swift nod to it that is very enjoyable (have to say Baby Queen sounds really cool on here). The song looks at ones self esteem and how the world can impact it (alongside yourself) and how you worry about people you being a buzzkill.

The title track of ‘Medicine’ is going around on the impact of the internet on your own life, for better or for worse? The opening verse looks at how the endless possibility of friendship online can make such a big impact on you, a shinning light for a lot of young people online. Yet the wider impacts on your own reality is looked at, how it feels to go outside again but the fix of the medicine (being the internet) saving you from struggles of real life.

‘Online Dating’ is a good take on how dating can be on the internet, in particular the dreaminess and lack of consequences potentially ‘being with someone’ through the internet. The slow nature of it makes it a gentle closer for the EP, again offering some solid lyrics about the concept of not having sex within an online relationship and the outpouring that is so easily to type to another person. To conclude with Baby Queen’s debut EP, it shines with so much talent and the potential of the artist. It is a great step in the right direction and leaves us waiting to see where she will go next!
