The new single came out of the start of the month! ‘deepfake’ is so atmospheric and seductive, how did this some all come about?
We wrote the intro riff for deepfake at the soundcheck of our gig supporting the American band Crumb at the Dome in Tufnell Park last year. The tone of the instrumentation was quite dark and menacing, and at around the same time our good friend Jessica Winter has learned that she had been deepfaked into a porn video online. The news was pretty strange and surreal and we ended up using that as inspiration for the song since it fit the mood perfectly.
How have you felt the reaction to the song has been?
It seems like people have received the song well. The subject matter is quite relevant to the weird world we live in and we don’t think it’s a topic that’s spoken about enough.
How did the band ‘deeptan’ form?
Wafah was in another band when the bassist quit. Luckily she was living with Celeste who could play bass so that was that. When Wafah and Celeste were looking for a drummer, Lucy was the perfect fit.
How has it been being a band in East London, what are your favourite venues to play in the city?
Two of us live in east London and one in south, which is great because both have great venues. We love the Windmill and Moth Club and the Shacklewell Arms.
The double A-Side release feels like these songs are two sides from the same coin! How did you guys make the decision to release the two singles together?
Our label Practise wanted to put out Shimmer and asked for a B-side, so we wrote Constant Inconsistencies in the same key as Shimmer and deliberately made this the dark side of the coin. They liked it so much that they decided to make the release a double A-side, which was a nice surprise.
I love the bass line and playfulness of ‘Constant Inconsistencies’, how was this song written?
It was written with guitar and bass together, then a topline. We went to a park another day, Hackney Downs, and wrote the lyrics. It was supposed to be a third longer, but we shortened it during the recording process to make it punchier.
It’s been an extremely turbulent year from us all, how has it been for the three of you? Hope you have been safe and well!
A turbulent year indeed. We’re safe and well, thank you. We had so many exciting shows and tours booked for 2020 that got cancelled, including The Great Escape, UK tours and festivals. The beginning of April was particularly hard as we were getting emails every single day with promoters cancelling live events. Lockdown was a difficult time for everyone,
I think. As soon as lockdown was lifted, though, we went into a bit of a writing frenzy, and we’ve got a lot of new material that we’re looking forward to releasing and playing live.
Also the new music video is amazing! How was that experience?
Our official music video for deepfake got taken down by YouTube because it went against their community guidelines, despite not having any nudity or graphic scenes. We ended up creating a visualiser for YouTube using the emails they sent us when they pulled the real video down. Our official video’s going to be live on Vimeo, who luckily have no issues with it. The director, Simon Milner, did an amazing job with it and we recommend you check it out. It’s very funny.
Make sure to check out the Music video and their current single 'deepfake'!
