'the unwelcome series'- Keaton Dekker: Each song feels like a journey on this impressive debut EP

The London based artist wanted to create a world for his eyes when making ‘the unwelcome series’ EP that focuses both on music and visuals, all created by himself and people who are close to him. Keaton loves 80’s music and you can hear the blend of indie and more pop leaning music from that time, the way he has made it his own too is very impressive. There is a sense of releasee throughout the EP, we find Keaton Dekker letting go of issues and problems he has faced, taking us into a world with him where he has confronted his feelings and relations with people. Overall this is a high quality debut body of work by an artist who seems to have a knack already of creating a world that is both relatable and catchy.

The bass line in ‘Gt’ grabbed my attention straight away, the opening track to the EP. It really jumps into something immersive, it has a guitar line through out it that is both bold and playful, while the backing harmonies surrounds us, making you feel like you are right in the centre of Keaton’s world that he has created.

‘Ityk’ was the second episode we heard from ‘unwelcome’ and it is utterly beautiful, the singers vocals sound so pure on this. The light keys are delicate as we hear lyrics about the realisation of how a relationship has fallen apart while thinking you knew all about the person, when in fact you did not. One thing that is regular within Keaton Dekker’s music is how each song feels like a journey; his songs take turns and goes through subtle changes to really make you feel you end up somewhere different from the start of each track, it is such a joy.

From the interview back in the early summer, Dekker explained that when writing ‘makeup’, he realised that making up every time with friends is not always the healthiest option. The track does feel very light with it’s 80’s synth sounds but does really hit you when it being about such a topic, overall it is a really effective and honest song. The ending of the song lasts for over thirty seconds, with a sparse synth part and stripped back guitar. It really does feel like it is that moment when you finally let go of something that was very dear to you but not very good for you.

‘Mint’ has a really cool beat and the melody is very delightful, again the vocals sounding so soulful and beautiful. It does feel very restraint this one but that does give it a needed touch, not every time you are going to full throttle when dealing with aspects of your life that are so emotional and gentle. We see again the subtle touches of an electric guitar, that is played so cooly under the night time like synths. I believe this song was written on Halloween back in 2018 and you can hear that for sure, it is so wonderful hearing the vibe of how it was all written from the artists bedroom. ‘the unwelcome series’ closes with a short but effective track in ‘Try Again’, it sounds like we are leaving the world we have experienced on this EP and I can not wait to return.
