Manchester band Cassia have been celebrated as one of the best live bands in the indie community, their infectious hooks and impressive/cool sound is one of the many things that earn them such an acclaim.
After releasing the album ‘Replica’ in 2019, which contained popular singles such as ‘100 Times Over’ and ‘Sink’, the band cemented themselves to be one of the best acts around to capture the indie sound, that so many hold close to their hearts. Due to the successful time recording the LP in Berlin, the band returned there to put together the EP ‘Powerlines’ and was it worth the trip? It sure bloody was.
The EP begins with such a delicate and chilled vibe with the title track, the bass line is so lush and such a highlight on the project. The concept of the song originated from the relationship with cigarettes and focuses on how to feel free again, a feeling that so many yearn for right now. Im sure this song will help many get away from the current climate of the world due to its lyrics and lovely atmosphere.
The hook we are given with the gentle horns in ‘Do Right’ is to die for, it welcomes us in with such a warm and calming breeze. The tropical nature of the rhythm on the track is reinforced by some nice percussion choices, with also the vocal melody notably feeling like a Foals meets Sting kind of style, a great blend obviously.
The cool vibes continue on ‘Drifting’ and is defiantly a beautiful moment on the EP, it will leave anyone wanting to wear a flowery shirt and round sun glasses. The way Cassia have created a lush and confident sound is commendable, there is a great mix of knowing what you will get from the Manchester band but still sounding so refreshed. The middle eight is a great example of this due to how you are just sent away somewhere else brilliantly, then return back to the chill vibes of the main hook.
The final track of ‘Powerlines’ was debuted by Annie Mac on Radio 1, an incredible moment for the guys Im sure. The song is called ‘Don’t Make A Scene’ and is a lovely send off, there is no arguments it will leave you excited to see this band at the next possible festival. The song contains a nice melody, the guitar work is also wonderful and feels like it is slowly sailing off into the ocean. Overall, Cassia’s new EP reminds us of better days in a beautiful summery way, it will leave you refreshed and wearing a beautiful grin once more, which we are extremely grateful for.
