The singer-songwriter teams up with label mates, Matty Healy and George Daniel, on her latest release. You can hear how much The 1975 boys have contributed to this EP, which many will enjoy but some would wish there was more than just ticking all the boxes, of late 90's guitar music.

The introduction of the EP is classic sounding with ‘Last Day On Earth’ and its songwriting, sounding very Matty Healy like from the word go. The guitars are reminiscent of his own bands single ‘Its Not Living (If Its Not With You)’ but the centre piece of the song is the hooks line of ‘shoot-do-doododo’ and it really does get stuck in your head. That part of the song is near off perfect but the rest of it, just feels like it needed an extra spice to it and ends up going through the motions, which could be fine for a lot of people but I wished it had a different angle to it later in the song.

‘Cologne’ has great sounding late 90’s guitars within it, giving the song a great scent to it (if you pardon the pun) and shows how well the collaboration of the artist and the 1975 boys works. To be very picky, it feels like there is too much of a focus to tick all the boxes of what is possible in aiming to do a piece of late 90’s British rock music, leaving it to feel a tad restraint and causing the songs to feel too boxed in to that era.

Don’t get me wrong, its all pretty solid but maybe there could have been some care to the songs and allowing them to go where they wanted to go, instead of packaging them up in 90’s nostalgia because you really want to.

Next, Beabadoobee snuggles into a stripped back cut on ‘Animal Noises’ to good affect, however it does feel like a leftover from Matty’s songwriting after penning down certain songs off his last album ‘Notes..’. The song is put together wonderfully, featuring some wonderful strings and a banjo that flows beautifully deep within the mix. It may not feel like the singer is setting this aesthetic alight but it feels like a nice shake up for her and gives this EP, a really pleasant moment for the listener.

‘He Gets Me So High’ finishes the EP in solid form, which is the most British the artist has ever sounded. The jangly and pretty guitar line, goes along in sweet fashion and then Matty Healy himself arrives with a nice piece of shredding on guitar and very fitting backing vocals.

Melodically, the track does not go far away from its main hook but is rather pleasant on the ear, giving us a good quality finish to this solid EP. ‘Our Extended Play’ may feel like it’s not exploring anything new with late 90’s guitar music but the solid songwriting and production, ensures that this latest EP by Beabadoobee is worth the listen.
