creeping speedwells EP- deep tan: 'Alt Enchantment' And Fine Quality On This Mesmerising EP Release

Written by Tom Bedding

The three piece offer us a project that draws you in and captivates you with its concepts and music. With creating such an entrancing tone, deep tan show that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Birthed from the bands favourite meme account during 2020, the opening track to deep tans EP, ‘do you ever ascend?’, is an incredibly fascinating and mesmerising listen. With it mostly being an instrumental, the song builds by brilliantly by adding such quirky layers to it, leaving this song getting better and better as each second goes by. There could be a slight hint of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard here but the three piece have a clear sound to them, which can be heard in the songs creepily smooth aesthetic and confined delivery. From the word go, deep tan offer you their charm and desires on the opening track and give us their most interesting track to date.

‘hollow scene’ is a trippy post-punk experience, containing an infectious melody and an overall feel that creates such a moody tone to it all. The vocals on the song feel so smooth and an attitude that is truly attractive and spellbinding, which really enhances deep tans intimate aesthetic to another level. The band back up the noteworthy vocals by having this transfixing drum part that rolls through to leave you in deep tan trance, something that I am totally okay with though.

What is interesting during this song, is how the guitar parts make you feel like something is coming up behind you as you are listening to this alone.... potentially resonating with us all with regards to the lockdown experience and fear of COVID during 2020.

Whats so infectious about deepen is how they can draw you in to a place that feels incredibly mystique, yet still enticing and welcoming. For instance, the next track does this and is based around a group who are being convicted from their flat and ending their stay by having a mega party, it just feels oddly attractive, doesn’t it?! The bass line in ‘camelot’ is infectious to the max, giving us a vibe that makes you want to dance like kermit meme, while knowing the end of your stay is nigh.

To conclude the bands latest project, we hear the band at their most stripped back and mysterious yet. With the French delivery of the vocals in the verses, backed by the sparse bass and guitar line, it feels like this song is rising from the ground under the night sky. Then when we get to the chorus, the deep tan magic rises in even more of a mystique way, leaving this song to be the perfect farewell for ‘creeping speedwells’.

This EP does leave an addictive and entrancing taste in your mouth, which rightly leaves deep tan to be one of the most fascinating bands around in the country with their awesome style as a band. You have to say, there a fair amount of post-punk music making the rounds right now but this enchanting EP, is one that can not be ignored.
