The Bedfordshire artist is feeling so confident on his new EP, with the whole project sounding so wonderful and bright. Naturally at 17 years old, Alfie Templeman is still learning but this body of work is filled with promise and passion, which is naturally leaving so many people excited about his future. If more fun and catchy ideas come this artists way, Templeman could really take UK music by storm.
The opener shares the same name as the EP (Happiness In Liquid Form) and what a delight of a number this is. The glistening guitar glides through with a cool beat alongside it, and with no question you can not deny that the title name is the perfect description for the song! It is filled with such wonder and the nice touch of the acoustic guitar slipping in during the pre-chorus, sounds very reminiscent of the Gorillaz.
A cool funk beat kicks off 'Things I Thought Were Mine' and with its vocal delivery and key board sounds, it is seems to be a lovely nod to Billie Eilish. Next is 'Maybe This Time' hit me with a Kevin Parker vibe as there is such a shine to the production and prominence of the bass line. It really meanders lovely with its sweet sentiments in the lyrics and the melody will leave you swaying along, yearning to see him play it on stage.
Something we all love, is the excitement around young artists putting out songs that show off their talent and gain a lot attention; not all write such songs but 'Obvious Guy' is that song for Alfie Templeman. He has such a catchy chorus here but just as importantly, Alfie has crafted elements of the song around the hook to enhance the track and allow it to become such a wonderful song. The bass drives the song so awesomely, the guitar licks are a lovely touch and the middle eight is to die for! Overall it offers so much to the listener and is great evidence of how Alfie is progressing into a top quality songwriter.
'Wish I Was Younger' has a chorus that nods to Eilish and her brother, which is a really fun song overall. The EP then finishes with the song that features the lovely Coach Party, 'My Best Friend'. The two acts are a great match, with the vocals of Jess and Alfie complimenting each other so well and again, the hook being insanely catchy.
One thing that stands out to me is that Alfie wants to have fun with his writing. The artist shows that you do not need to strive to be all angst or attitude when you got good enough songs, that are simply catchy and awesome.
